There are many native Plantains, both annuals and perennials; but Plantago major and Plantago lanceolata are the most common weedy species found in our lawns and gardens. They are palatable, and can provide some forage for livestock. On the other hand, pollen from all Plantains is a common allergen.
The best control is acheived by digging, making sure to get the entire crown of the plant.
This perennial was brought over from Europe some time ago. Its pollen is a common
trigger for hay fever.
